Repellency of LG® air-conditioner with ultrasonic device against dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.)

Abstract
The repellency rate of ultrasonic device attached to the LG air conditioner was evaluated against dengue mosquito in the laboratory. Fifty adult dengue mosquitoes were released in the outside chamber which is connected by channel-like window to the outside chamber with one person as attractant. When the LG residential air conditioner with ultrasonic device was put on, an average of 82.70% of the mosquitoes were repelled. This repel rate is quite high considering that the repel rate in Korea and Bangladesh ranged from 62 to 84%. The LG residential air conditioner has a speaker that emits ultrasonic waves that is harmless to humans but may keep mosquitoes away. Therefore, by installing the LG air conditioner with ultrasonic device an added advantage of repelling about 82.70% of the adult dengue mosquitoes could be achieved.
