Field evaluation of entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillimin for the control of rice bug, Leptocorisa oratorius Fabricius

Issue Date

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted for two cropping seasons from January to December 2014 in Agusan del Norte to evaluate the efficacy of Beauveria bassiana against the rice bug, Leptocorisa oratorius Fabr. One field spray application of B. bassiana fungal suspension at the rate of 1 x 10 sup 9 conidia/mL during panicle initiation of the rice crop had significantly lower rice bug (36-47%) population than in the control treatment (55%) but higher than that with insecticide treatment (29%) 1 week after post treatment. Plants sprayed with the higher concentration of the fungus had significantly lower rice bug adult population (23%) compared to other treatments (31-49%) after 2 weeks post treatment. Yield was significantly higher (4.08 tons/ha) than in untreated control (3.39 tons/ha) in the 2nd cropping season, but comparable (3.19-3.63 tons/ha) in the 1st cropping season. The population count of dead biological organisms such as Micraspiscrocea, damselflies, spiders, parasitic wasps and yield components of the rice plants were recorded.
