Abstract
The leafminer (LM), Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess), is an important insect pest of onion grown after rice in different provinces of Central Luzon, Philippines. Different colored sticky board traps were evaluated for two years to determine the most attractive color to LM flies in onion fields. Yellow sticky board traps (YST) caught significantly more L. trifolii adults than blue, purple or white traps. YST were evaluated as a management component for L. trifolii by mass-trapping adults. Adult flies caught on YST were counted and recorded weekly starting at one week after transplanting until harvest. Percent damaged leaves caused by L. trifolii and number of mines per leaf (severity) were monitored weekly on 50 randomly selected plants per plot by recording the number of plants showing LM damage and the number of mines per damaged leaf. Adults were detected in the sticky traps as early as 14 days after transplanting (DAT). An early peak of LM catches was recorded at 21 DAT. A second, higher peak occurred at 63 DAT. Peaks in percentage of damaged leaves and number of mines per leaf was recorded at 22 and 72 days after transplanting. Mean percent damaged leaves and mean number of mines per leaf (severity) were significantly (P<0.05) lower in fields with YST at 50 DAT onwards. L. trifolii damage was significantly higher (P<0.05) in plots treated with insecticide due to resurgence of LM, and yields were higher in plots with YST. The study demonstrated that YST could be incorporated in the management strategy against L. trifolii adults in the field by trapping the flies, and possibly as tool for effective timing of control interventions. Results showed that YST could be integrated with other control tactics for effective management of L. trifolii infestation in onion and other vegetables.
