Modified rearing technique for green lacewing (Chrysopa spp.)
Issue Date

Abstract
Green lacewing (Chyrsopa spp.) is a voracious feeder of aphids, mealy bugs, whiteflies, scale insects and other soft-bodied caterpillars. It is being mass reared in other countires and utilized as biological control agent of several insect pests. At the Bureau of Plant Industry-Crop Protection Division, rearing technique was modified using locally available materials ans synthetic diets for adults. Due to the cannibalistic behavior of lacewing larvae, using corrugated cartolina prevents them from consuming its siblings. Another way to control cannibalism is to reduce the number of adults of larvae placed inside the box. To ensure humidity, small plastic caps (tight fitting covering for bottles or cups) were prepared by putting cotton wad moistened with water and covered with tissue paper. This method or rearing green lacewing maybe utilized to sustain and supplement the needs of organic farming practitioners and interested stakeholders for experimental purposes, field release, biological control projects and mass rearing.
