Chlorantraniliprole: a new insecticide effective for the control of Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis Guenne) in corn
Issue Date

Abstract
Chlorantraniliprole 50g/L SC was evaluated against Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis Guenne) and other pests of corn (Zea Mays) at Sto. Tomas, Calauan, Laguna, Philippines on February to May 2008 at the rates of 20, 25, and 30 grams active ingredient per hectare (gah) as foliar spray at 26, 36, 46, 56 and 66 days after planting (DAP). Chlorpyrifos 3E, Lambda Cyhalothrin 2.5 EC and Methomyl 40 SP were used as commercial reference treatments at local label rates of 157.50, 5.620 and 210.00 gah, respectively. The overall corn borer larval counts, corn borer damage assessments at whorl and tasselling stages, corn borer hole count and tunnel length assessments on corn stalks clearly and consistently indicated that Chlorantraniliprole 5SC at the rates 0f 20, 25, and 30 gah was consisting all highly effective in controlling corn borers. In contrast, the commercial reference treatments used in this study were less effective in controlling corn borer. At 29 DAP, the highest level of infestation of corn borer was observed in the Untreated Check (UTC) with a mean number of 74 larvae per 20 hills, while for Chlorantraniliprole 5SC treated plots only an average of 12, 13, and 8.75 larvae were observed at used rates of 20 gah, and 30 gah, respectively. For the reference treatments, average numbers of 31, 49, and 52 larvae per 20 hills were observed for Chlorpyrifos 3E, lambda cyhalothrin 2.5 EC and Methomyl 40 SP, respectively. At harvest, there were no observed damaged stalks for Chlorantraniliprole 5 SC treated plots while for the reference treatments Chlorpyrifos 3E, 95% of the stalks were damaged, for Lambda cyhalothrin 2.5EC 100% and Methomyl 40 SP with 98%, In addition, mean computed corn yield in tons per hectare (tons/ha) was highest Chlorantraniliprole 5SC treated plots in 10.55 tons/ha for 20 gah, 10.40 tons/ha at 25 gah, and 10.84 tons/ha at 30 gah. From the reference treatment of Chlorpyrifos 3E, the mean computed corn yield was 7.70 tons/ha, from Lambda cyhalothrin 2.5EC was at 7.42 tons/ha, from Methomyl 40 SP was 7.61 tons/ha,and from the Untreated Check was 7.51 tons/ha.
