Cytogenetics of Solanum aethiopicum L., S. melongena L. and their F₁ hybrids and the mechanism of hybrid sterility and breakdown

Abstract
Cytogenetic studies of the cultivated species and its wild relatives offer significant information useful for successful breeding programs. These studies determine the degree of affinity of the parents based on the nature of chromosome pairing and fertility in the hybrid. Cytogenetics of Solanum aethiopicum (8971), S. melongena (var. DLP and Acc.(3305), and their F₁ hybrids was done using iron-aceto carmine squash technique to elucidate the cytogenetic relationships between the wild species (S. aethiopicum) and cultivated species (S. melongena). Fluorescence microscopy was used to determine pre-fertilization barriers. S. aethiopicum and S. melongena are diploid species with 2n=24. Meiosis in the studied species including their F₁ hybrids was normal (12 II). Despite normal meiosis low percentage of pollen fertility (8.67% to 12.34%) was noted in the hybrids. Pre-fertilization barrier in the form of inhibited pollen tube growth was noted in the hybrids.
