The influence of storage on the shelf life of Trichogramma evanescens parasitoids on cards: adult emergence and longevity as influenced by temperature, relative humidity and photophase*

Issue Date

Abstract

The storage life, adult emergence and life span of T. evanescens were assessed under varying levels of temperature, relative humidity and photophase. The parasitoid used in the experiment was obtained from the mass rearing facility of the Biological Control Laboratory of the Crop Protection Cluster- National Crop Protection Center in the University of the Philippines Los Banos. Assessments were made from the tricho-cards and populations of wasps exposed under varying sets of storage conditions. In the laboratory, storage temperature has significant influence on the shelf life and adult emergence of T. evanescens stored on tricho-cards. Storage temperature of 8°C is lethal to the parasitoid. Tricho-card stored at 18°C had the longest shelf life of 22 ± 0.4 days with high adult emergence comparable to tricho-cards stored at room temperature (27°C). The life expectancy or fitness of the emerging adults was similar to that of wasps that have emerged from tricho-cards kept at 27°C. Storage of tricho-cards at varying relative humidity and photophase did not have significant deleterious effect on shelflife, adult emergence and longevity of T. evanescens.
