Responding to the challenge of emerging pests:the case of Aspidiotus destructor Cocq. on coconut in Batangas
Issue Date
10-2012
Abstract
The recent outbreak of Aspidiotus destructor on coconut in Tanauan, Batangas has posed a great challenge to entomologists on the management of a previously known minor pest of coconut palm that has become exceptionally destructive, partly as a result of changing climatic conditions that have allowed the pest to multiply faster and spread farther to areas suitable for them. Re-evaluation of control methods is currently being done to identify factors that could increase the effectiveness of IPM strategies and reduce crop losses. Natural enemies, particularly predatory coccinellids, have been identified and are now being mass-propagated for inundative and augmentative releases in affected areas. Mechanical as well as chemical strategies are also being reviewed to determine how they can complement biological control activities. Mitigating measures to soften the impact of the pest infestation on coconut have also been recommended to maintain farm productivity and the income-generating capacity of affected coconut farmers.
