Abstract

Sixty (60) corn farmers in Partido area were surveyed from November 2011 to February 2012 to determine their perceptions and control practices on CPH, determine the population dynamics of CPH, as well as diversity and abundance of natural enemies and their practices in controlling pest. Chi square test and Biodiversity Program Version 2 were used in analyzing the data. Except for Caramoan, most of the farmer in all municipalities in Partido area has knowledge on CPH. Source of knowledge were farmer's meetings (51.67%), agricultural technicians (33.33%) or TV (21.57); on radio, and actual observation. CPH infestation in forms of 76.67% of the farmers started in 2006-2010 while the rest was in 2001-2005, particularly at Tigaon and Caramoan. Occurrence of CPH was during the dry season although some claimed it was in the wet season. Origin or cause of infestation as perceived by the farmers were: transferred through the light of a boat (35.00%); by wind (28.33%); plant itself (8.33%); climate change (1.67%) and; from mango trees (1.67%). Application of insecticides was the only control method used against CPH, although chlorine and soap ware used also. Frequencies of insecticide application were: once (30.00%), twice (41.67%) and thrice (23.33%). The CPH population in Tigaon was highest in farm 2 and Farm 3 at Sangay. Natural enemies were most abundant and diverse among the vegetative stage of corn.
