Mammalian fauna of Mt. Malasimbo, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Mindoro Island, Philippines

Abstract

Puerto Galera is regarded as one of the most important areas in terms of biodiversity within the Mindoro faunal region. Different habitat types were surveyed for mammalian fauna in Mt. Malasimbo in Barangay Aninuan. Standard methods using mist nets and various types of traps were used during the entire duration of the study. The methods were augmented with general observations and ethnobiological interviews. A total of 25 species of mammals were recorded which includes 12 bats, seven rodents, two civets, a single species of shrew and macaque, and two threatened sub-species of large mammals, namely the Mindoro brown deer (Cervus mariannus barbarandus) and the Mindoro warty pig (Sus philippinensis oliveri). Both Philippine and Mindoro Island endemic species were highest in the primary forest, moderate in the secondary forest and lowest in the agroforestry area. The results show that the primary forest still represents a valuable stronghold for some of Mindoro's threatened and endemic mammals. A more comprehensive faunal and floral survey should be conducted to include the adjacent areas within the Malasimbo-Talipanan-Alinbayan mountain range.
