Field evaluation of predatory earwig Euborellia annulata (Fabricius) in combination with makabuhai or Bacillus thuringiensis (XentariⓇ) against flea beetle and cabbage worm on pechay

Abstract

To develop potential integrated pest management technologies against major insect pests of pechay, several treatment interventions were evaluated as follows: T1-IPM1: release of earwig at 1 and 2 weeks after broadcasting (WAB) of pechay seeds + spraying of Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt); T2-IMP2: release of earwig at 1 and 2 WAB plus weekly spraying of makabuhai water extract; T3-weekly spraying of methomyl; and T4-Control (no spraying). The flea beetle, Phyllotreta striolaata and cabbage worm, Crocidolomia pavonana (Fabricius) were the most dominant insect pests encountered in the field. The flea beetle damage rating on plants release with earwigs and sprayed once with Bacillus thuringiensis (T1) was not significantly different from that in plots sprayed weekly with methomyl (T3), suggesting that the release of 40,000 earwigs per hectare contributed to reducing flea beetle damage. In contrast, cabbage worm populations was significantly lowest in plots with weekly insecticide spraying of methomyl. Although the highest yield and net income was obtained from plots with weekly sprayed with methomyl (FP), the IPM treatments could still be recommended since its relatively free from insecticide residues. In rice-based cropping pattern, pechay should be planted immediately within ten days after rice harvest to escape high infestation of flea beetle and cabbage worm. Second planting should be avoided since there will be higher population of the second generation pests.
