Colonization and movement of beneficial organisms in rice, vegetable and other non-rice ecosystems

Issue Date

Abstract

An important principle in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is to maximize natural control which is the utilization of naturally occurring beneficial organisms like predators, parasitoids and microorganisms. There are rich communities of these organisms in the rice ecosystem. Conservation of these organisms through reduction of insecticide misuse is one of the foundations that led to the success in rice IPM in several areas of Asia. However, the movement and colonization of beneficial organisms in rice-vegetable cropping is not well understood. The vegetable fields and other non-rice habitats around rice fields are suspected to be an important refuge to natural enemies during fallow period, especially generalist predators. Understanding the movement and colonization of beneficial organisms is an important factor for a sustainable IPM program in rice and vegetable production, hence this study.
