Issue Date

Abstract

Collaborative work between the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) and the Regional Crop Protection Center-DA RFU 5 was done to assess the infestation of armyworm and its control in the Bicol region. Infested areas reported by the IPM coordinators were validated by the team and control measures recommended. The study was conducted from July to September, 2010. In Albay, four (4) municipalities had their corn, vegetables and pasture areas infested by armyworms with a total area of 137.25 hectares. In Camarines Norte, the municipalities of Vinzons, Paracale and Calaguas islands had a total affected area of 130 ha of rice, corn, grasses and trees infested. Five municipalities in Camarines Sur had corn, pasture, grasses and sugarcane affected by armyworm whereas in Sorsogon two municipalities had their pasture areas infested. Highest infestation was recorded at Masbate with a total of 2,055.42 ha planted to rice, pasture, corn and vegetables. Control measure employed was solely application of conventional insecticides. A total of eight (8) species of foliage were found defoliating the crops and pasture grasses in Bicol. These were identified as: Common cutworm, Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera; Corn semi-looper Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper) L.(Noctuidae:Lepidoptera); Corn earworm Helicoverpa armigera Hubner (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera); Grass armyworm Spodoptera mauritia Boisduval (Noctuidae:Lepidoptera); True armyworm Mythimna separata Walker (Noctuidae:Lepidoptera); Black armyworm Spodoptera exempta Walker Noctuidae:Lepidoptera); Hawk moth/potato hornworm Acherontia spp. (Sphingidae: Lepidoptera); and Hornworm Agrius convulvuli (L.) (Sphingidae: Lepidoptera). Continuous monitoring, control and biological studies are being done by the team.
