Hazard assessment of pesticides detected in the Pagsanjan-Lumban watershed

Abstract

Laguna Lake is the largest island water resource in the Philippines and important source of fish in the area. The Pagsanjan-Lumban watershed is the main fresh water input of the lake but contaminant resulting from agricultural activities within the watershed may have impact on fish. An acute hazard assessment was conducted by comparing the LC50 values of pesticides to freshwater shrimp. Macrobacterium or Tilapia sp. and Lemna minor and actual concentrations of the pesticides detected in selected sampling areas within the Pagsanjan-Lumban watershed. The maximum measured concentartion of profenofos and pyrethroids in the field samples collected from the Pagsanjan-Lumban watershed were above the 48th LC50 values and thus posing a high hazard coefficient (HQ>1) to shrimp in the Pagsanjan-Lumban watershed. Low actual risk estimate was obtained for Lemna sp. based on concentrations of six pesticides detected in the watershed.
