Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis Heude) census in Mt. Iglit, Occidental Mindoro and gene pool farm

Issue Date

1992

Abstract

A census of the tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis Heude) population was conducted at the former 9,000-ha Mt. Iglit Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary (GRBS), of which about 2,000 ha was identified as a tamaraw habitat range. The actual inventory was made in a 400-ha sample plot or census area established within the GRBS. A technique for conducting a census was described which gave a count of 26 head of tamaraws within the 400-ha census area or a ratio of one tamaraw per ha. Thus, the total number of tamaraws at the Mt. Iglit GRBS was placed at about 133 head. Limitations of the study were also discussed. Tamaraw count at the Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP) Gene Pool Farm showed five males and two females roaming the fenced-off habitat. The approximate location range of the animals was indicated.
