Environmental attitudes and behavior of College students in two Manila Universities: Implications to tertiary level environmental education
Issue Date

Abstract
This study determined the level of attitudes and behavior of college students on environmental issues. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 558 college students from two universities in Metro Manila. The majority of the students are concerned about the environment or consider themselves as environmentalists. The majority (53%) thought that the Philippines goverment is worried enough about the environment. Likewise, most of the students thought that the Filipino public and Philippine businesses and industries were generally not worried about the state of the environment, and garbage disposal. The students were least concerned with acid rain and radioactive contamination. The three main activities performed by the students and their families to improve the quality of the environment were reducing their household's use of water, recycling, and cutting down the household's use of energy. There is a continuing need to recognize the attitudes and behavior of college students in relation to the environment. Tertiary education could focus on a wider range of environmental experiences. Integration of global environmental issues in college courses could enrich environmental education in the country.
