Environmental resources management planning in Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Lanao del Norte, Philippines

Issue Date

2003

Abstract

Sultan Naga Dimaporo is a coastal municipality in the southwestern part of Lanao del Norte Province in Nothern Mindanao. The town is identified as a major contributor to the overall provincial development for fishery and tourism, and as an international gateway for trading. The paper looked at the municipality's sustainable development planning in the next five to ten years as embodied in its comprehensive land use plan. The development framework being pursued by the municipality has been expressed in the strategies on poverty alleviation and social amelioration, increased economic opportunities, sustainable use of land and coastal resources, and increased and efficient provision of basic services. The environmental resource management plan cuts across all the sectors and is integrated in the sectoral projects and programs. It covers forest ecosystem, water resources, settlement areas, and agriculture. The plan's huge budgetary requirement poses a significant constraint to its implementation.
