Spider diversity in the buffer zones of Mt. Isarog

Issue Date

Abstract

Collection and identification of spiders found in selected buffer zones of Mount Isarog Natural Park were carried out from December 2008 to February 2009. Collection areas were at Curry in Camarines Sur, Panicuason in Naga City and San Pedro Aroro, Goa in Camarines Sur. The spiders collected consisted of 34 species from Curry, San Pedro and Panicuason bufferzones of Mt. Isarog. They are distributed among 9 families, namely: Salticidae, Zodariidae, Lycosidae, Thomisidae, Pholcidae, Clubionidae, Theridiidae, Eusparassidae, Sparrassidae and most likely, one more family since there are still unidentified specimens. Among the sites, Curry had more diverse and abundant species of arachnids along elevational gradients. Among the sites, Curry had more diverse and abundant species of arachnids along elevational gradients. Among sites and sampling months, higher elevations had greater abundance but less diverse species of spiders. Conversely, lower elevations showed lower abundance but high diversity. Spiderlings were found in all the buffer zones indicating that in 5-6 months time, adult spiders will be found abundant in Mt. Isarog.
