Effectiveness of commercial insecticide formulations as curtain treatment against the dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract
Adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were collected from suspected breeding places, identified and mass reared prior to the test. Treatment application of the 35 cm x 160 cm light yellow nylon lace curtains was based on the standard protocol of treating bed nets by the World Health Organization. Deltamethrin, a-cypermethrin, etofenprox and cyfluthrin were used in the test and prepared based on the manufacturer's recommended dosage. Efficacy of the formulations was based on percent mortality of test insects exposed to the treated curtain. Results of the tests showed that all test insecticides were affective in control of the dengue mosquito A.aegypti. The mortality of the test insect in treated curtains varied during 24 hours after treatment. Mortalities were quite low during the first 5 to 15 minutes of test on deltamethrin- and etofenprox-treated curtains and even lower of cyfluthrin and a-cypermethrin-treated curtains at much longer period of time. An increase in insect mortality was observed with longer exposure period. On deltamethrin-treated curtains, mortalities of 50% and 100% were attained in 15 min 6 hours, respectively. The insecticides persisted on 1 to 5-week-old treated curtains as shown by the residual toxicity test. Efficacy of the insecticides was affected by laundering the treated curtains with soap and water. Longer exposure period was needed to attain higher percent insect mortality.
