Mass rearing of Cotesia sp. and its parasitization of Diaphania indica infesting ampalaya

Issue Date

Abstract

The host insect, Diaphania indica (Saunders), is being reared in the laboratory using the mass rearing procedures of Cabriga (1996) with slight modification. Pupae of Cotesia sp. were collected from cucurbit fields and placed in rearing cages in the laboratory. Upon emergence of the adult wasp, honey solution in a cotoon wad was placed in the container and Diphania indica larvae niched in Luffa leaves were then exposed to the parasitoid for 24 hours. Then the larvae were transferred to 750ml plastic containers, lined with paper and provided daily with fresh luffa leaves. The paper linings were placed only when necessary to limit both the disturbance to the larvae and the exposure to microbial contamination. Once the host larvae reached 5th instar, strips of paper were provided in the container for parasitoid pupation. The Cotesia pupae were then collected using a fine paintbrush and placed in the plastic bottle for adult emergence.
