Population pattern and parasitization of three mango leafhopper species by Halictophagus sp.

Issue Date

10-2009

Abstract

Twenty-five different mango trees were monitored for the initial detection of Halictophagus sp on the three known species of mango leafhoppers (Idioscopus clypealis, I. niveosparsus and Bakera nigrobilineata) for one month (mid July to mid August, 2008). Six mango trees (3 Carabao variety and 3 Katchamitha) infested by mango leafhoppers stylopized by Halictophagus sp during the initial survey were identified and sampled weekly for seven months from September 2008 to March 2009. Carabao variety was significantly more infested by I. clypealis than Katchamitha variety. Three distinct peaks of population density of hoppers were observed: medium level from August to October, 2008, a low level at the end of October, 2008 to February, 2009 and a high level from March to April, 2009. Two mango leafhopper species (I. clypealis and I. niveosparsus) were parasitized by Halictophagus sp but not B. nigrobilineata.
