Black bug Scotinophora coarctata (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) on corn in Mindanao

Abstract

In 2004, the rice black bug Scotinophora coarctata (Fabricius) was serendipitously found on the moist portion of the husk of corn ears during monitoring of the new corn planthopper pest at New Panay, Esperenza, Sultan Kudarat. Observed were different stages of the black bug such as mating adults, nymphs and eggs. They were on Bt corn and hybrid corn that were about to be harvested. Similar pest surveillance activity was undertaken at Isulan and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat and at Colambo, South Cotabato on April 22-24, 2008. Again rice black bugs were found on the husks of corn ears. It was noted in 2004 that the corn fields were surrounded by fallow rice fields. Hence, rice black bugs must have used corn as alternate host and refuge. It was reported by the DA staff of Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat that they observed black bug feeding on the stem and leaves of corn plants at early whorl stage. The fields investigated this year have nearby rice fields at early vegetative stage where black bugs cannot survive yet. It is probable that many areas in Mindanao are experiencing the presence of black bugs on corn.
