Surveillance and monitoring tools as component of pest management program for key insect pests of vegetables grown after rice

Abstract

Sex pheromone traps and yellow sticky board traps were evaluated as monitoring tools for the common insect pests of vegetables grown after rice in Nueva Ecija. Sex pheromones of cutworm Spodoptera litura, and armyworm S. exigua, were evaluated in onion, of the tobacco fruit worm. Helicoverpa armigera on tomato, and of the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) Leucinodes on eggplant. On the other hand, yellow sticky board trap was evaluated on leaf miner attacking onion and other vegetable crops. Results of the study indicate that sex pheromone-baited traps detected the early arrival of the pests in the field and are effective indicators for timing of interventions against cutworm and armyworm on onion. Trap catches of fruit worms in tomato field show good correlation between trap catches of male moths and maximum egg laying of females. This indicates the possibility of using the traps in timing of management interventions like chemical control. Yellow board traps is shown to be useful in reducing leaf miner damage on onion by mass trapping adults in the field.
