Evaluation of microbial isolates in the management of post harvest insect pests of rice in PhilRice-CES

Issue Date

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the mycoparasitic ability of twelve (12) Metarhizium anisopliae, two (2) Beauveria bassiana and one (1) Paecilomyces sp (1) isolates against the common post harvest pests Sitophilus oryzae and Rhyzopertha dominica in PhilRice CES warehouse. Result of the bioassay trials revealed that mortalities of S. oryzae and R. dominica were significantly higher for those treated with microbial isolates compared to the control (distilled water only). Furthermore, bioassay trials showed that three of the M. anisopliae isolates and Paecilomyces sp were highly virulent against R. dominica. Six of the M. anisopliae and Paecilomyces sp caused significantly higher mortality on S. oryzae. beauveria bassiana isolates had no significant effect on S. oryzae and R. dominica. Bioassay trials revealed the potential of isolates of M. anisopliae and Paecilomyces sp isoaltes for controlling S. oryzae and R. dominica. thus, further exploration of their potential as alternative to synthetic pesticides is needed to protect stored products, particularly rice seeds.
