Evaluation of new rice varieties for resistance to major insect pests of rice
Issue Date

Abstract
The activities of the NCT project facilitate the release of rice varieties with improved qualities for farmers' use. The multi-location, interdisciplinary testing permitted the screening and evaluation of varieties that satisfy the diverse and stringent requirements of the different agro-ecological zones in the Philippines. From 1990 to 2000, varieties were coded "PSB Rc" in honor of the Filipino rice researchers and development workers who test, multiply and disperse the varieties; the code stands for Philippine Seed Board Rice. In 2001, coding was changed to NSIC Rc to stand for the National Seed Industry Council Rice. Eleven new NSIC rice varieties were approved in 2007. Despite these achievements, the development of varieties must be continuing activity to release new varieties that can withstand current insect pressure in the field, climatic stresses and new market demand.
