Abstract
Twelve species of ants are identified from specimens collected from various households, most of which were form urban, a few suburban and rural communities. These belong to different subfamilies and hereby enumerated: under the subfamily Dolichoderinae: black ant Dolithoracicus (Smith) and phantom ant Tapinoma melanocephala (Fabricius); Formicinae: yellow-red crazy ants Anoplolepis gracilipes (Smith), Camponotus spp., weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius) and black crazy ant Paratrechina longicornis (Latreille); Myrmicinae: dark-headed pharaoh ant Monomorium floricola (Jerdon), Pharaoh's ant Monomorium pharaonis (Linnaeus), big-headed ant Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), seed-gathering ant Pheidologeton diversus (Jerdon)and tropical fire ant Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius); and in the Ponerinae: two spined ants Diacamma spp. Notes are given on their preferred food substrates i.e. whether they are sugar-loving or fat-and-protein-loving, and whether nocturnal or diurnal. Photographs are provided for most of these and important identifying features are highlighted.
