Ovarian changes induced by gamma radiation treatments on corn earworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract

Female pharate adults of the corn earworm (CEW), Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), irradiated with Cobalt-60 gamma ray doses [0 Gray (Gy), 100 Gy, 200 Gy, and 400 Gy] exhibited ovarian changes. Histological evaluations of the ovaries of the irradiated insects and their F1 progenies revealed significant effects on the relative sizes of both nurse cells and oocytes. Twenty-four hours after treatment, the mean nurse cell sizes decreased 22.7% (100 Gy), 47.7% (200 Gy), and 56.8 (400 Gy). A corresponding effect pattern in oocytes was also observed with about 46% decrease in size at 400 Gy. Three days after treatment, the observed pattern on nurse cell and oocyte sizes remained although at lower magnitude. Females became sterile after treatment with 400 Gy since no offspring was produced. Histological analysis revealed structural degeneration and destruction of the ovaries due to radiation treatments. Even at low doses, the F1 progeny of irradiated female and non-irradiated male had inherited deleterious effects. Among the F1 progenies, significant reductions in nurse cell and oocyte sizes were apparent. At 100 Gy and 200 Gy levels, the mean nurse cell sizes were 0.46 ìm and 0.49 ìm, respectively. These values were significantly lower than that in the control. Similar pattern was also observed in oocyte sizes.
