Capitalizing the use of diverse parent lines in identifying heterotic three-line hybrid rice

Abstract

Utilization of diverse germplasm has continuously play a significant role in hybrid rice breeding especially in increasing heterosis. Capitalizing diverse parental lines with better agronomic traits is proven to be an effective strategy in developing superior three-line hybrids. Therefore, generation of experimental hybrids from the different breeding pool by test crossing is imperative. A field experiment was conducted at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, Central Experiment Station during the dry season of 2016 to evaluate the yield performance of generated hybrids from different breeding pool. A total of 444 hybrids were generated from the different breeding nursery namely, 19 Tropical Japonica (TJ), 15 doubled haploid (DH), 27 recombinant inbred line (RILs), 15 Restorer Nursery (RN), 16 saline lines and 32 promising lines from the irrigated lowland (IL) and eight WA CMS parents as testers. They were evaluated following the augmented design with Mestiso 1, Mestiso 19, PSB Rc18 and PSB Rc82 as check varieties. Analysis of variance revealed significant difference among hybrids for yield. The top five entries selected based on grain yield and phenotypic acceptability were TCN428 (10117.9 kg/ha), TCN132 (9878.05 kg/ha), TCN57 (9516.70 kg/ha), TCN111 (9241.48 kg/ha) and TCN224 (9240.7 kg/ha). Yield advantage of the top five hybrids ranged from 15.30% to 96.2% over the four check varieties of which the combination of PR15A x PR35015-GA-5-5-1 was the highest. Moreover, 24 potential restorers and 37 maintainer lines were also identified on the selected parents. Heterotic hybrids identified were nominated for advance yield trial and potential B and R were nominated for restorer and maintainer line improvement.
