Evaluation of putative Gal-ong rice mutant lines for yield associated traits

Abstract

Induced mutation is one of the potential tools which have been successfully exploited for improving several traits in many crops, including rice. Special traditional rice varieties (TRVs), such as Gal-ong, are being sought after not only locally but in the international market as well for their good eating quality, nutritional significance and aroma. Gal-ong is produced and utilized for commercialization and export purposes, but satisfying its demands was unsuccessful because of its low yield (approx 3 tons/ha). The study was conducted to develop improved TRV Gal-ong-derived breeding lines with high yielding trait through induced mutation. In 2016 WS, 82 selected M4 lines of Gal-ong were subjected to basic agro-morphological characterization and yield performance under field condition. During evaluation, occurrence of blast and brown plant hopper (BPH) incidence was observed at early and late vegetative stages of rice in which high susceptibility of the wild type (WT) Gal-ong was observed, and 49 putative-moderately to resistant mutant lines were identified in terms of grain yield, the same mutant lines had 6% to 105% yield advantage compared to the WT which yielded an average of 3 tons/ha. Other desirable traits observed among the putative mutant lines were early to medium maturing, reduced plant stature, long-slender to long-semi bold grains, more tiller count and long and dense panicles. Further evaluation for trait stability of the selected mutant lines will be done in the following seasons.
