Insects with hemagglutinating activity as lectin source
Issue Date
4-2004
Abstract
Common insects were screened for lectin activity. The different insect samples were homogenized and the homogenate extracted using Tris buffer saline solution, pH 7.5. Presence of lectin was detected through hemagglutination assay using different human and animal erythrocytes. Results showed that some household insect pests like cockroaches, ants, flies and mosquitoes have strong agglutinating activity against human erythrocytes, thus potential sources of lectin.
