Heading date analysis of introgression lines of rice (Oryza sativa) derived from its wild species, O.rufipogon, O.nivara and O.meridionalis

Abstract

Heading date, a crucial factor determining regional and seasonal adaptation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been a major selection target in breeding programs. To determine the distribution of days to heading (DTH) of wild rice introgression lines (ILs), six populations of ILs derived from crosses between cultivated rice species (O. sativa, IR64) and wild species (O. rufipogon, O. nivara and O. meridionalis) were developed. Two BC1F10 to BC1F13 populations of ILs each from the wild species were evaluated under normal daylight condition at International Rice Research Institute for two seasons, 2016 dry and wet seasons. DTH was expressed as the number of days from sowing to heading. O. nivara 89073 and O. nivara 93005 populations have the wildest distribution of DTH for both seasons among the six populations. The two populations are composed of ILs with shortest DTH (57-91 days) during dry season but have the longest DTH ILs (71-111 days) during the wet season. The range of heading date of O. meridionalis 93261 and O.meridionalis 93262 during dry and wet seasons has small differences, however, during dry season; the number of ILs with shorter DTH has increased compared with wet season. These observations were the same with O.rufipogon 104486 and O.rufipogon 93283. Therefore, these ILs from wild species have a wide distribution of DTH. These population are useful tools for genetic analysis and identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for DTH and other useful traits. The authors are currently investigating genetype of ILs in each population to conduct QTL analysis for DTH.
