Determinants of tree pruning and fruit bagging technology adoption among mango growers in major producing areas in the Philippines

Abstract
Tree pruning and fruit bagging are technologies that can improve mango production. Bagging is widely practiced in Visayas and Mindanao but not in Luzon while adoption of tree pruning technology also varies widely across the country. The 332 mango growers and contractors interviewed were grouped as adopters and non-adopters, then described as to age, experience in mango production, educational attainment, household income, and membership in organizations. These attributes, along with economic, physical , technological and institutional factors were analyzed using probit analysis to determine their influence on the probability of adopting the technologies. Location, age and number of trees, compatibility of pruning with other practices, and the grower's age and educational attainment influence the probability of adopting tree pruning. Seven variables were found to have significant influence on the probability of adopting the fruit bagging technology with availability of technical assistance could not be adequately provided, mango growers would remain ambivalent to adopt the technology. The rate of adoption was higher in Visayas and Mindanao than in Luzon, hence a separate function for Luzon was estimated. The influence of age was negative and that of education was positive, contrary to the general result for all respondents. Two other important determinants were household income and cost of chemical control. Bagging is expensive, thus producers with more income have higher probability of adoption. Adoption will further be enhanced if the price of chemical control will continue to increase in the local market. Thus, pricing mechanism that would make the cost of chemical control higher than cost of bagging could be an important motivation for fruit bagging adoption.
