Management of the eggplant fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (guenee): evaluation of farmers' indigenous practices

Issue Date

10-2004

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate two indigenous pest control practices of farmers (planting of Tagetes sp. as insect repellant and weekly application of burned rice hull by dusting) against the eggplant fruit and shoot borer. Weekly spraying of insecticides (chlorpyrifos + BPMC), a common farmers' practice, and weekly removal of damaged fruits and shoots, an IPM-CRSP recommended technology, were included in the evaluation. Damaged shoots and fruits were accessed weekly and number and weights of damaged and healthy fruits were recorded. Weekly removal of damaged fruits and shoots resulted in the highest weight of healthy fruits and lowest incidence of damaged fruits among the treatments. There was high incidence of damage fruits in treatments where farmers' indigenous practices were applied to control the pest. Control plots had yield comparable to that of the weekly-sprayed plots. Initial results of this study indicated that regular spraying of insecticides does more harm than good to the farmers and therefore unnecessary.
