Damage and abundance of insects in eggplant-based multiple cropping system

Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the abundance of insect pests and natural enemies and their relationship with pest damage in eggplant-based multiple cropping system. The treatments evaluated were T1-eggplant/corn; T2-eggplant/pepper; T3-eggplant/pepper/string beans; and T4-eggplant alone. The insect pests observed were leafhoppers, 28-spotted beetles, thrips, cutworm, shoot/fruit borer, aphids and leaf miner. Other arthropods like spider mites, lady bird beetle, plant bug and spider were likewise observed. Results revealed that there were significantly higher populations of leafhopper, thrips, mites, and shoot/fruit borer during the entire observation period in the plots planted solely to eggplant than in those with intercrops, so with the populations of beneficial arthropods like ladybird beetle, plant bugs and spiders. Among the four treatments evaluated, plants planted solely to eggplant produced the highest yield, but it also had significantly more (number and weight) non-marketable fruits than the slots with intercrops.
