Factors related to export intensity of Filipino agripreneurs

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the factors related to the export intensity of Filipino agripreneurs. Secondary data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Philippine economy database were utilized. The respondents were derived from the Adult Population Survey (APS) conducted among Filipino entrepreneurs from 2013 to 2015. Out of a total of 6,000 APS respondents, 344 involved in agriculture-related businesses served as sample of this study. Using tests of association, specifically, Cramer’s V, Spearman and Kendall’s Tau correlation, the gender of entrepreneur, location of enterprise, household income, network, fear of failure, motivation behind establishment of enterprise, perception of status and respect in the country of businessmen, publicity of success stories, awareness of Asian Economic Community (AEC) integration, perceived intensity of competition under AEC as well as perceived benefits and opportunities under ASEAN show significant association with export intensity. Commodity types and stages in the value chain were found to moderate these relationships. The results suggest that in order to boost internationalization among agripreneurs, there should be entrepreneurial trainings for would-be exporters to enhance their networking, self-confidence, risk-taking, and opportunity-seeking competencies. There should also be more orientations on AEC to increase agripreneurs’ awareness of the opportunities and challenges as well as success stories under ASEAN integration.
