Floral damage of Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee) (Pyralidae, Lepidoptera) on eggplant

Issue Date

Abstract

Preliminary examination of undetached eggplant flowers, as well as fallen ones and corolla, showed high preference of eggplant fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee), for floral part. Damage on undetached flowers ranged from 60 to 100%; fallen flowers, 70 to 100%; and fallen corolla, 100%. In the succeeding sampling of undetached and fully open flowers, 28.11% of the flowers were damaged by the larvae on the stamen only, 19.82 on both stamen and corolla, and 52.07% on all the stamen, corolla and pistil. Damage on stamen only was caused mostly by larvae in the 1st instar (45.90%), and 2nd instar larvae (37.70%). Damage on both stamen and corolla was mostly due to the 3rd instar larvae (78.05%). Damage on all flower parts (stamen, corolla, and pistil) was mostly due to the 3rd (37.5%) and 4th instar (25.74%) larvae. Fifth instar larvae were not encountered in any flower sample examined. It is hereby proposed that L. orbonalis be called simply eggplant borer to help correct the impression that it feeds only on shoots and fruits or prefers them over other parts of its host, flowers in particular.
