Flower damage of Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee) on eggplant
Issue Date

Abstract
Failure of eggplant to bear fruits in Asingan, Pangasinan alarmed farmers and prompted many of them to abandon eggplant production. They suspected failure of variety as the causal factor. A technician from a seed company attributed flower abortion to high temperature. Preliminary examination of undetached flowers, as well as fallen flowers and corolla showed consistent association with larvae of fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee). Damage to undetached flowers ranged from 60 to 100%; fallen flowers, 70 to 100% and fallen corolla, 100%. In the succeeding sampling of fully open undetached flowers to determine the extent of feeding activity of the larvae, it was found that about 28% of the flowers had damage on the stamen only, 20% on both stamen and corolla, and 52% on all the stamen, corolla and ovary. Damage on stamen only was mostly due to the 1st instar larvae (45.9%), followed by the 2nd instar (37.7%), 3rd instar (11.48%) and 4th (4.92%). Damage on both stamen and corolla was mostly due to the 3rd instar larvae (78.05%). Damage on all stamen, corolla and ovary was mostly due to the 3rd (37.5%) and 4th instar (25.74%) larvae.
