Arthropods of medical and veterinary importance: status and directions
Issue Date
10-2002
Abstract
Developments in medical and veterinary entomology in the last forty years are re-viewed. The order Diptera received most of the attention because of its importance in disease transmission such as malaria, dengue and filariasis. At present, mosquitoes are still of prime medical importance. House flies are the main problems in commercial poultry, swine and cattle farms and researches should be geared towards managing these nuisance pests. Quality Assurance personnel of food processing and manufacturing plants, restaurants and food chains should be trained in monitoring and controlling arthropod pests. Continuous upgrading and training of pest control operators to better serve the community. And, our quarantine system should be improved to minimize the spread of diseases. Researches and extension services in medical and veterinary entomology should be reinvigorated to better serve the changing time and community demands.
