Evaluation of technology dissemination for integrated pest management towards sustainable agriculture in irrigated lowland rice

Issue Date

1-1996

Abstract

Technology dissemination in the integrated pest management (IPM) project in Infanta and General Nakar, Quezon was evaluated by the Project Benefit Monitoring and Evaluation Systems (PBMES) staff of the Dean's office, College of Agriculture, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in January 1995, using a prototype questionnaire.

The study evaluated the IPM information transfer and the problem solving and decision making capabilities of farmers in relation to farm management and determined the socio-cultural effects of IPM on the farmers and their environment.

The percentage of pesticide and inorganic fertilizer users drastically declined as the training was completed (two rice cropping seasons) from about 80% to 0% and 10%, respectively. All the participants shifted from <40 x 10 cm distance of planting to the recommended 40 x 10 cm distance after the training. Eighty-three percent of the training participants and dropouts have already shared the knowledge they have gained from the training.

Some variables related to the problem solving and decision-making skills of the farmers before and after the training were subjected to a factorial analysis. Based on results, the farmers were able to develop their approach and role characteristics toward self-reliance and empowerment.
