Climatological data analyses for rainfed rice production management decisions

Issue Date

Abstract

Climatological data analyses using historical records were undertaken and applications to crop production management decisions were presented. Determination of optimum cropping pattern for rainfed rice production at Los Baños was used to demonstrate the methodologies. Optimum planting date and timing of subsequent farm activities for rainfed rice at the site was established based on the onset and end of rain and risk of dry spells during the cropping season as determined from analysis of 32 years (1959-1990) rainfall record. Suitability of the cropping schedule based on the other climatic requirements of the crop (maximum and minimum temperatures, solar radiation intensity and evaporation rate) was subsequently analyzed. Optimum planting date of rainfed rice at Los Baños is on June 11 or any day within a period of 5 days earlier or later than that date. This date represented the mean date of the earliest onset of rain suitable for starting rainfed rice based on a 32-year rainfall record. Cropping schedules based on those planting dates will insure attainment of the required amounts of rainfall at high probabilities (275%) and no risk of dry spell occurrence during the critical growth stages of the crop. Proper timing of subsequent farm activities and attainment of the required levels of other relevant climatic parameters for optimal growth of the crop were also determined to be the most favorable during the said cropping schedules.
