Microbial and enzyme dynamics of compost with additive
Issue Date

Abstract
A microbial concoction treatment (0.1 % w/v) of sawdust + manure compost was formulated to hasten its maturity and evaluate its effect on the growth of microbes and the dynamics of 19 enzymes that belong to five groups - phosphatases, esterases, amino-peptidases, proteases and glycosyl hydrolases. Quantitative estimation for microbes was done via direct plating on appropriate media while the quick enzyme strip test method was used to assess the enzyme activity of the compost. A big drop in temperature to < 57°C was observed in the control as early as day 10 while the treated compost maintained a temperature range of 57-71°C for 38 d with an established optimum temperature of 60°C. The higher aerobic heterotroph, actinomycete and fungal count compared with that of the control was sustained up to 90 d of composting. At 90 d, the DMP-Comp treatment had the highest number of actinomycetes at 11.2 log10MPNg-1 whereas the control had only 7 log 10MPNg-1. No fecal coliform was detected in the 30-d-old compost with additive at 60°C, however, the coliforms appeared 10 d earlier in this treatment than in the control. There was significant active production of α-glucosidase and β-glucosidase in the treated compost at 30 and 60 d of storage. However, there was a large difference in r2 between the fungi and the alkaline phosphatase (0.77 vs. 0.54) and between the actinomycetes and the alkaline phosphatase (0.97 vs. 0.86) in the treated and the control compost. Based on the findings, the compost pile consisted mostly of heterotrophs and bacterial nitrogen fixers. At higher rates, the additive can also influence the enzyme activity of compost microbes.
