Efficacy of probiotics, enzymes and dried porcine solubles in swine
Issue Date

Abstract
To assess the efficacy of alternative animal-enhancing products particularly for swine, three independent experiments were conducted under Philippine conditions. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of probiotics on gestating sows and litter size. Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of different inclusion levels of a cocktail enzyme on the growth and economic efficiency of weanlings and the last experiment compared the growth performance of starter pigs given a diet supplemented with 2% dried porcine solubles (DPS) and 2% Argentina soybean meal. Based on the results of the probiotic study, litter size and feed intake of suckling at different growth periods were comparable to those of the control. Breed difference, however, was noted but there was no interaction effect between breed and treatment. A dose-dependent relationship was observed in the average daily gain and feed conversion ratio of the weanling pigs as inclusion rate of the cocktail enzyme increased. Likewise, the economic effect of feed additive was viable as shown by a remarkable decrease in the feed cost per kg gain in weight of the animals. The DPS-fed starter pigs had a significantly higher average daily gain and feed conversion ratio over the soybean supplement and, despite its expensive source, it is still economical to use as shown by the comparable feed cost per kg gain in weight. The results of these investigations showed the effectiveness of these alternative feed products.
