The effect of fertilizer nitrogen on accumulation and redistribution of dry matter and nitrogen in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is the key element in achieving consistently high yield in cereals, and also affects the amount of protein in grain. Grain protein concentration (GPC) is an important quality trait of bread wheat grain. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of N fertilizer on the accumulation of dry matter and on pre-heading and post-heading N uptake in two winter wheat cultivars - Bezostaja-l and Momtchill. The cultivars were grown with N rates of 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1 in Tokat, Turkey. In the study, characteristics such as total dry matter (TDM), plant N content and plant N concentration at awn emergence, grain dry matter (DM), straw dry matter (DM), harvest index (HI), total plant N content, grain N content, grain N concentration, nitrogen harvest index (NHI), straw N content, straw N concentration, post-heading N uptake, N retranslocation and N retranslocation efficiency at maturity were investigated. The traits and mean values investigated during the second growing season were significantly higher. The results showed that there were generally no distinct differences between cultivars for the investigated traits. N fertilizer increased the TDM, N content and concentrations of plants at awn emergence. Total plant N accumulation, grain and straw N accumulation also responded positively to increased rates of N fertilizer at maturity. Post-heading N uptake and N retranslocation increased, but N retranslocation efficiency response to N level varied according to year. The results showed that N uptake after awn emergence contributed more to the grain N than the retranslocation of vegetative N did and this represented 52% and 55% of total grain N per plant for 2001 and 2002, respectively.
