Abstract

Four Philippine endemic hoyas namely: Hoya crassicaulis Elmer ex Kloppenburg, H. merrillii Schlechter, H. mcgregorii Schlechter and H. pubicalyx Merrill were characterized in terms of their cytological features. Chromosome number, morphology and behavior during mitosis and meiosis were investigated. All of the hoya species evaluated have normal mitotic activities, with very low mitotic indices ranging 3.85-10%. Karyotypes of the four endemic species revealed consistent diploid chromosome number of 2n = 22. Based on the position of the centromere, two types of chromosomes were observed. Majority of the chromosomes are metacentric except for H. merrillii wherein submetacentric chromosomes predominate Except for H. merrillii, meioses in the three endemic hoyas were normal and 11 chromosome pairs were observed at diakinesis. H. merrillii had chromosome numbers ranging 10-12 chromosome pairs with 11 pairs as the modal number. Benchmark information gathered will aid in the establishment of complete taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships among the different members of the Philippine hoyas.
