Abstract

Higher education institutions have an essential role in developing environmental awareness and increasing the environmental practices of tertiary education students. As a state college in Occidental Mindoro, OMSC aims to produce graduates that are locally responsive to societal concerns, including environmental issues. This study aimed to provide relevant information about the environmental education of tertiary education students by analyzing the environmental awareness and practices of the students at Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC). Using a descriptive-correlational design, the data was obtained from 259 students from various colleges. A four-part online survey questionnaire was used to determine the demographic profile, environmental awareness, and environmental practices of the respondents. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to test if there exists a significant relationship between variables. Results reflected more female respondents, where 48.3% came from the College of Business, Administration and Management. 57.5% of the respondents are not affiliated with any organization, with digital materials as their source of environmental information. Findings reveal that the respondents are slightly aware of environmental concepts and state of environment, and moderately aware about environmental issues and problems. They often practice environmental related actions to solve problems. The results of the correlation analysis show that even with the students’ affiliation with environmental organizations and associations, their current environmental practices are not reflective of their advocacies. It is recommended to increase the conduct of environment-related seminars, and the integration of environment-related topics into the curriculum. Future research may focus on incorporating other factors that may influence environmental practices such as environmental attitudes, values, motivation, or institutional support.
