Abstract
The effectiveness of an Insect Pest Management technology (IPM-DBM) versus Farmers' Control Practice (FCP) for diamondback moth (DBM) control was demonstrated in the field in Brgy. Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon. The IPM-DBM technology utilized Cotesia plutellaeas the core component supplemented with microbial insecticide (Bacillus thuringiensis var aizawai, B.t.a.) based on the economic threshold level (ETL) of 2 larvae per plant at 1-4 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and 5 larvae per plant at 5-10 WAT. The farmers' control practice is weekly spraying of fervalerete. The two releases of 7,000 C. plutellae cocoons/ha/release and one to two Bta spraying suppressed DBM population. The level of DBM control in FCP-managed field, sprayed 4-8 times with fenvalerate, a pyrethroid insecticide, was very low. Yield increase in IPM-managed field was 48% higher than the FCP and 123% higher than the untreated control, resulting in net income of 87% higher than the FCP.
