Abstract

The life history, development an survival rate of the common birdwing, Troides rhadamantus Lucas, on Aristolochia tagala Cham., its natural host plant, and A. elegans Mast., an introduced ornamental, were compared. Larval, pupal and adult abnormalities in external morphology were observed when the insects were reared on A. elegans. Likewise, larval and pupal periods were longer on A. elegans. On the contrary, adult size and longevity were reduced.
