Abstract
The effect of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiated rice leaves on the growth and development of the rice leaf folder, Marasmic patnalis Bradley was investigated. Two experiments were conducted using UV-B irradiated whole rice plants and detached leaves. Results showed that UV-B irradiated 44-day old leaves of whole plants had lower levels of phenolic content and were feeding stimulant to the test insects. UV-B irradiated detached 22-day old leaves had higher phenolic content and antifeedant and growth inhibitory to the larvae. Adults reared on older whole plants irradiated with UV-B laid fewer eggs. The reduction in the number of eggs suggests that the effects of these kinds of compounds were crucial at the later growth and development stages. Results derived from this study encouraged further investigations to determine the effects of partially-purified extracts of UV-B irradiated leaves on the test insect.
