The mealybugs (Pseudococcidae, coccodea, hemiptera) of eggplant (Solanum Melongena Linn.) in the Philippines

Abstract
Mealybugs infesting eggplants were taxonomically studied. Three species were collected and identified, namely, Coccidohystrix insolita (Green), Ferrisia virgata (Cockerell) and Planococcus minor (Maskell). Diagnostic characters and geographical range for each species are here enumerated and keys for the identifications of eggplant mealybugs in the field and in the laboratory are provided. The life history on Dumaguete Long Purple (DLP) variety as well as the host range, natural enemies, associated ants and seasonal abundance of C. insolita were investigated. Females of C. insolita underwent three instars. Nymphal development ranged from 10-24 days whereas the total developmental period ranged from 14-34 days. Adults lived for 18-32 days on the host. The biology of F. virgata was reviewed. The presence of eggs was suggested in contrast with an earlier study that reported otherwise. Five eggplant lines/varieties were screened for resistance to C. insolita and preliminary results indicated that PI-381272-2, an accession earlier found to be resistant to the cotton leafhopper, was also resistant to the eggplant mealybug whereas DLP was highly susceptible.
