Determination of penetration limit of wind distributed generation (DG) considering multiple bus integration

Abstract

© 2018 IEEE. Distributed generation (DG) has provided benefits to the system including reliability and power quality. In addition, integrating renewable type specifically wind reduces negative environmental impact. However, improper placement and unregulated penetration could result to higher power losses and worsen voltage profile. In this paper, wind DG planning with the objective to determine its penetration limit (PL) to the system was implemented. Multiple bus integration and wind stochastic nature were considered to determine their impact on the optimization. Iterative optimal DG placement through genetic algorithm (GA) was implemented in IEEE 37-bus system using the component object model (COM) interface between MATLAB and OpenDSS. The results show that DG integration at PL resulted to a significant reduction in power losses and improvement in overall voltage profile. The case with 18 DGs resulted to the highest real and reactive power losses of 34.7846 % and 39.6776%, respectively. On the other hand, the case with a single DG resulted to the most improved overall voltage profile with an average total voltage deviation of 0.7650 pu.
